Welcome to Madison Street Bakehouse: Your Local Artisan Bakery Shop
Let’s be honest, the smell of freshly baked bread is one of life’s simplest and most profound pleasures, and that’s the experience we craft every single day at our little corner of London. From the first crackle of a crust to the last buttery crumb of a pastry, we pour our hearts into everything we make. We’re not just a bakery shop; we’re your neighbourhood gathering spot, a place where community and craftsmanship rise together.
What Makes Us the Best Artisan Bakery Shop?
In a city filled with options, being called the ‘best’ is an honour we don’t take lightly. For us, it isn’t a marketing term. It’s a daily promise measured by the integrity of our ingredients, the patience of our processes, and the joy our bakes bring. While others may rush, we believe the best flavours are coaxed, not forced. It’s this dedication that we believe sets our artisan bakery shop apart.
Our Sourdough is a Labour of Love
Our sourdough is the heartbeat of the bakery. Each loaf begins with our own living starter, nurtured for years, and is mixed with exceptional flour from Shipton Mill. The real magic, however, happens during our signature 48-hour sourdough fermentation. This slow, cool rise develops a depth of flavour, a chewy yet airy crumb, and a crisp, blistered crust that simply can’t be replicated quickly. It’s a true labour of love, baked fresh for you daily.
Pastries That Tell a Story
From our flaky, golden croissants to our seasonal fruit danishes, every viennoiserie is crafted by hand using traditional French techniques. We layer and fold our butter meticulously, ensuring hundreds of delicate layers. Our fillings, from zesty lemon curd to rich almond frangipane, are made in-house using the best British produce we can find. Every bite tells a story of skill and dedication.
Why Our ‘Artisan’ Label Means Something
Today, ‘artisan’ can be overused. For our team, it’s a non-negotiable standard. It means:
- Hand-shaping every single loaf and pastry.
- Never using industrial additives, improvers, or pre-mixes.
- Sourcing ingredients with purpose, like our partnership with Shipton Mill.
- Baking in small batches throughout the day for ultimate freshness.
For us, artisan isn’t a trend; it’s the timeless craft of baking at its most honest and delicious.
Our Artisan Bakery Shop Price & Value Promise
We understand that our handcrafted sourdough loaf carries a different price tag to a mass-produced supermarket bloomer. Our value promise is simple: every penny reflects the unparalleled quality, flavour, and care baked into every item. When you buy from us, you’re investing in nourishment for the body and soul, supporting local skills, and choosing taste over haste.
Understanding the Cost of Craft
The price is a direct reflection of the craft. Premium organic flour, European butter, and seasonal fruit cost more. The time-intensive processes—like our 48-hour fermentation or the three-day process for our croissants—require more skill and labour. We pay our talented bakers a fair London wage. This is the real cost of creating food with integrity.
More Than a Loaf: It’s an Experience
Your purchase is more than a transaction. It’s the warmth of our shop, the knowledge of our team, and the guarantee of something made with human hands. It’s the satisfaction of a crust that sings when you tap it and the complex, tangy flavour of a properly fermented sourdough. That’s the value we bake into every product.
Artisan Bakery Shop Reviews: What Our Community Says
Nothing makes us prouder than the feedback from our wonderful community of regulars and visitors. From heartfelt notes left on Google to chatter at the school gates, your words fuel our passion. We’ve also been humbled to be featured in local guides like Time Out London, celebrating us as a destination worth seeking out.
Word-of-Mouth is Our Favourite Compliment
The best reviews aren’t always written online. They’re the sight of a customer closing their eyes to savour their first bite, the weekly family that comes in for their Saturday treat, or the recommendation passed between friends. This genuine, word-of-mouth endorsement is the greatest compliment our artisan bakery shop can receive.
Featured In: Celebrating Local Accolades
While we bake for our neighbourhood first, we’re chuffed to have been recognised by local press and organisations that champion independent businesses. Being listed in Time Out London and as part of the Made in London community are milestones that remind us we’re on the right path, baking things Londoners truly love.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are your opening hours?
We are open Tuesday to Sunday from 7:30am until 4:00pm (or until we sell out!). We are closed on Mondays to give our team a rest and prepare for the week ahead.
Do you take orders for celebration cakes?
Absolutely! We specialise in beautifully simple, delicious celebration cakes. We require a minimum of 72 hours’ notice for most orders. Please pop into the shop or give us a call to discuss your ideas and get a quote.
Is your bakery suitable for people with food allergies?
While we handle nuts, dairy, gluten, and other allergens in our bakery, we take great care to minimise cross-contamination. However, we cannot guarantee any product is completely free from allergens due to our small, open kitchen. Please speak to a team member when you visit, and we will guide you through the options available that day.
Do you offer gluten-free products?
As a traditional bakery specialising in fermented breads and pastries, our core expertise is in gluten-containing grains. We do not currently offer a range of gluten-free products, as we feel we cannot do them to the same exemplary standard we hold for everything else.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about Madison Street Bakehouse. We are more than just an artisan bakery shop; we are a passionate team of bakers dedicated to bringing genuine craft and joy to your table. We can’t wait to share our bread with you.
